How does it work? -Counselling provides a safe, non-judgemental and non-directive environment which helps you to develop an understanding of your own needs and the options that are open to you.
What can I expect from my first session?- It is important that you find someone who you can relate to and can build trust with. A big part of the first session is about exploring if we can work together. Once this has been established further sessions can be booked.
Will it be difficult?-Facing up to issues and challenging our behaviour requires bravery, but the agenda and pace within the counselling environment is determined by you. Counselling allows you to explore difficult/sensitive issues where appropriate. It challenges, teaches and helps to gain awareness which can help promote change
Will what I say be treated confidentially? -Confidentiality is a fundamental core requirement of the counselling process. It helps to set the boundaries and build a relationship of trust between you and the counsellor, enabling an environment where true, honest expression of feelings can occur. The only time a confidence will be broken is if the counsellor has significant reason to believe you are in danger of hurting yourself or others, or where the law requires it.
How would counselling benefit me? -Counselling provides you with a space to talk openly and frankly about what’s going on for you. The non-judgemental atmosphere is combined with experience of working with male issues and male behavioural traits.
Will it mess my head up?! -It requires courage to tackle our problems, but the pace and agenda is set by you. If you don’t want to talk about something specific, you don’t have to. A good counsellor will acknowledge difficult areas but leave you in the driving seat.
What if I get emotional - I rarely cry? -You are not required to “get emotional” in counselling, but you won’t be judged if you do. Importantly, you’ll be in an environment where your emotions can be expressed safely and explored.
